About Course
This the first level of training for any therapist wishing to undertake the hands-on therapy pathway into Ayurveda. With knowledge from Foundation Principles of Ayurveda, that is a prerequisite to this course, participants conduct all massage therapies with an awareness of the natural elements present within each individual hence being able personalize all treatments with appropriate pressure, rhythm and other components used in each therapy.
Level 1 is aimed at providing a substructure to other specialized therapies. The heart of this training program are key techniques for reviving balance through cleansing and rejuvenating, as well as stimulating Marmas. Marmas are significant Ayurvedic sites on the body that can be stimulated to achieve overall health and balance, as Marmas are junctions for several types of tissue elements in the body that include blood and lymph vessels, muscles and bone tissue, and nerves.
What Will I Learn?
- Preparation techniques including client positioning for comfort, therapy room, equipment, oils and other components involved in each therapy
- Massage with an understanding of the purpose and benefit of each technique
- Understanding, Locating and treating Marmas appropriately
- Adjusting therapy according to each individual body type (Prakruti) and imbalances (Vikruti)
- Sustaining client’s well-being through keeping a balance of elements
Topic List
Marma Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Body Oil Therapy
Marma Abhyanga is a wonderful combination of Ayurvedic massage with focus on the entire body as therapists go through each of the main Marmas on the body from the feet right up to the base of the head. Marma Abhyanga prepares the body for advanced treatments as it relieves muscles and clears away toxins through cleansing the lymphatic channels. In addition, Marma Abhyanga revives circulation in the blood vessels thereby bringing in more oxygen to each and every cell of the body. It may be used effectively for detoxification as well as rejuvenation.
Shirobhyanga: Ayurvedic Head, Neck and Shoulder Therapy
This is one of the most effective treatments in Ayurveda for relieving stress and mental tension. It is done with Ayurvedic Medicated oils that are applied to the head, neck and shoulders. Beginning with gentle relaxation, students are guided step by step through the entire Shirobhyanga session. Marma points enhance the treatment as they are stimulated appropriately.
(Oil pouring on the forehead)
Shirodhara: Ayurvedic Head Oil Therapy (Oil pouring on the forehead)
An ancient healing system, Shirodhara has been an important therapy in Ayurveda. Literally translated, “Shiro” means head and “Dhara” means flow. The continuous pouring of warm oil on the forehead has a tremendous healing effect especially on the nervous system. It releases locked energies, clears and calms the mind, and works on all levels of one’s being from the physical to the subtle. Training includes adjusting the flow of oil, refilling the pot, and other technical details during the session including different methods of oil flow in order to attain overall benefits.
Practice sessions for all the topics above ensure that techniques are well-grasped and well-applied. At the end of the training, participants are able to confidently and independently conduct all the therapies covered in Ayurvedic Therapist Level 1.
